Yeah I read a bible that had all the references explained which made it clear that this was basically the wacky ancient roman religious cult version of a political cartoon.

I am somewhat of a paradox in that I am a self described atheist who has a Masters degree in Theology, so of course my interest was peeked when I saw you had a section on bible studies!

When it comes to the dreaded book of revelations, I always hate to see those theist literal interpretations of a book that was written during the time of the Roman persecutions of christianity. FYI the number 666 refers to Nero, you know that guy who played his fiddle while Rome burned? The book in total is a code that only early christians could understand. Unfortunate for us we don't have the campanion lexicon. It is dangerous to look at this book out side of theological scholarship and rely on it is a vailble source of divine communication. Given the subject matter covered we should really consider it the "horror movie" of the bible! Tell me honestly you don't believe that "freddie or jason" will jump at you and your family as you picnic next labour day!

A couple years ago my then 8 year-old daughter asked about the 666 superstition so we read through Revelation. As you can imagine, we found it unenlightening. But it did prove useful a few weeks later when my she, in a completely different context, asked me what schizophrenia was. I was then able to answer that it was having visions like John's and believing them.

Your synopsis of Revelation is great, and I almost fell out of my chair laughing about the mushrooms! (I had to quote you when I blogged about the Newsweek article...)

I just don't understand how anyone can take this stuff seriously.

Fun times! Have you seen the new Newsweek? If so, how could you forget this wonderful link?

http://www.raptureready.com/
It boggles the mind that that is NOT a spoof site.

Here is the Newsweek article, if anyone missed it:

I thought the seven horrors loosed upon humanity were universal health care, gay marriage, gun control, medical marijuana, bilingual ATMs, high gas mileage standards and remakes of Casablanca.
