Dale, thanks for that post - what a unique take on an election result that is "historic" in so many respects. Who knows what Obama believes or thinks in his heart of hearts but with folks in the black community questioning at the beginning of the campaign whether Obama is "black enough," imagine if he wasn't a church-goer and a professed believer?! He would not have gotten very far even in his own community. I firmly believe that freedom on conscience - i.e., freedom not to believe - is much safer under Obama than it would have been . . . perish the thought . . . under another Republican administration. That said, I plan to watch very closely what he does with respect to faith-based initiatives and his science policies and will not hesitate to criticize if he panders to the right or, indeed, to the fringe left. There's plenty of irrationality on both extremes of the spectrum.

I still think he is an atheist. Not that it matters, I too would be proud if my children grow up to be anything like him. I only dislike people who see the world in absolutes, not religious people, even though many religious people are absolutists. Maybe after 8 years he will write another chapter to his memoir about being an atheist the whole time. That would make some people think..

As much as I agree with what you wrote, Dale, I just can't help cringe at the thought that my kids would become Obama-like, but still credit ancient myths for getting them there. My kids will understand that the principles Obama exhibits pre-date any mythology. I will also make sure they realize that adopting a subjective label will put them in somebody's out-group and thus handicap their efforts to build bridges with those people.

Obama's good; as long as I don't fail them in this regard, my kids will be better.

Thank you for writing about this.

The aftermath of this election is turning a bit harrowing for me and I seem to be losing a friend over it. It's good to read something positive.

Wonderfully said Dale. One of the reasons I've been such a supporter of his is because of the incredible diversity of his background-and that goes far beyond the race of his parents.

fantastic post, dale. on my personal blog i try to stay far, far away from religion, as i'm not "out" as an atheist to many of my friends. but i'm seriously thinking of putting up a link to this... i don't know if i'll have the guts, but this is just so well put. thank you for helping us remember ann.
